Treadmill Desks

Treadmill desks are the ultimate solution if you're looking to maximize the movement and health of your desk time.  They are undoubtedly more expensive than a traditional standing desk alone, but the value added to your life is impossible to put a price tag on.

By creating a steady state of movement, a treadmill desk helps boost thermogenesis in the body, helps keep blood and other systems pumping, helps boost good hormone production, and encourages the body to maintain an ideal posture.

That last point is one of the lesser known benefits of using a walking treadmill.  Whereas many standing desk users report fatigue after a certain amount of time standing, treadmill desk users typically do NOT.  The slow and steady walking motion forces the body to stay in good posture and actually contributes to energy creation, as opposed to using it up - allowing some users to stay on their feet for most of the day.  Many have been known to walk 5+ miles in a day, without feeling any kind of energy crash.  It might sound counter-intuitive, but a body in motion stays in motion.

And for those of you that might be concerned about being able to work while you walk, we suggest taking the leap and trying it out.  You'll be walking at a very slow pace (typically between 1 mph and 1.4 mph), so it's quite a bit easier than you would think.

Under Desk Treadmills

If you already own a sit-stand desk, then we suggest you choose from one of these options which can be paired with virtually any standing desk.

Just keep in mind that most of these treadmills raise you 5" - 8" off the ground, so it's important to pair these with a taller desk.  We suggest a 50" maximum height adjustment or better, depending on your own height.

Aside from that height concern, each of these underdesk treadmills are designed so that they can be paired with any desk, with separate controls that can be placed on top of the desk surface.  Please just note that the Unsit Desk by InMovement (our #1 recommended treadmill) does require 39" of clearance between the legs of your desk.

Sit-Stand Treadmill Desks

Each of the following treadmills come bundled with an electric sit-stand desk.  It is worth reiterating that all of these treadmills can be paired with virtually any desk (just make sure it adjusts to 50" or higher).  However, by purchasing the desk treadmill as a bundle, there are typically some savings and advantages to be had.

For example:

  • The Unsit Standing Desk that comes with the Unsit Treadmill raises to 53" high - so it's specifically designed to work well with a treadmill.
  • The Lifespan treadmills desks come with controls built right into desk surface.

There was a time when most treadmill desks were built as one piece, but thankfully these companies got smart and realized that people often have their own personal preferences.  So if you have your eyes on a nice reclaimed wood or executive desk, just refer back to the Under Desk Treadmills above.

Please note that all of the options below come with electric height adjustable desks. If you're looking for something a little less expensive, you could look into the Lifespan desks with the DT5 manual standing desk - but we don't generally recommend this option, because they are very inconvenient to adjust.

Which Standing Desk is Best?

To read more about which treadmill desk is right for you, we strongly recommend you take a look at our list of the Best Treadmill Desks of 2021, where we compare each of the top models side by side.

You'll notice that we mostly disregard the inexpensive treadmills that can commonly be found on Amazon.  We've tested several of those treadmills, and although the $500 price tag might be enticing, we simply can't recommend any of them.  They're all poorly built, and the physical nature of these treadmill make it impossible for them to last longer than a few months with regular use (due to restrictions on gearing, motor size and space for cooling).
